Bob White honored for work at the Henry County Development Authority

The following article by Asia Ashley was printed in the January 30, 2015 edition of the Henry Herald.

Friends of Bob White filled the Hudgins Room at the Chamber of Commerce Thursday afternoon for his retirement from the Henry County Development Authority.

“We all have one thing in common today,” said development authority Chairman William Herndon. “We may be different in many ways, but we’re all friends of Bob White.”

White has been the development authority’s executive director since 1995.

“Under his leadership, Henry County has been able attract a plethora of businesses to our community, and investments and jobs,” read county Communications Director Melissa Robinson from a proclamation issued to White on behalf of the county.

He has been instrumental in the retention and expansion of existing industries through “strategic marketing and outstanding service,” the proclamation said.

Prior to his time at the authority, he served as assistant director of economic development for the Atlanta Gas Light Company and was the first vice-president, second vice chairman, and secretary treasurer for the Georgia Economic Development Association, where he also served as chairman in 2011.

“He was instrumental in attracting new businesses and focused on helping Henry County foster an entrepreneurial environment,” Robinson said. “And in fact, in January 2006, was the driving force of Henry County completing the process to become Georgia’s 15th entrepreneurial friendly community, a designation from the Georgia Department of Economic Development.”

Herndon presented an appreciation award to White from the development authority in recognition of his “untiring and devoted service as executive director” and the assistance that he has provided industries.

“I’ve valued our friendship and we’ve known each other for quite a while and I’ve valued being with you on the development authority,” he said.

White thanked all who attended the reception of whom he said has meant a great deal to him in his nearly 20 years in Henry County.

“When I look around at all the people who are here, the people in the business community, people in the real estate community, the people that we’ve worked with, it’s so humbling,” White said. “We’ll always remember pretty fondly the times that we’ve had together, the growth that we’ve had together. One of the great things about what we get to do in economic development is drive through the industrial parks and the community and see those pieces of the community that we’re able to touch.”

White said he is most proud of his involvement with the educational facilities, most notable Mercer University and Southern Crescent Technical College.

“Turning the page as I begin the next chapter, a big chunk of my life and the book of Bob White is right here in Henry County,” he said. “I appreciate you for giving me the opportunity to work with you. It’s been a pleasure.”

White has plans to continue working in economic development in other communities.
